The missing piece to your ideas is that there must be an overarching, i.e. ULTIMATE Truth. Otherwise you are correct, each side will claim that they are fulfilling the constructs. To have an ultimate TRUTH, there must be an ultimate AUTHORITY. That’s where the poo gets flung. Most of us (honestly)want to be the one who gets to define the truth, and we are all flawed and biased on our own. The Exodus story exists knowing that Yahweh, perfectly loving and sovereign, defines and exemplifies Truth and Authority. Until a consensus is reached about Who defines the terms, it’s going to be a mess. The garden of Eden showed what happens when humanity is left to choose the terms.
I wish I could agree with you. Some of my best compatriots want to appeal to the ULTIMATE TRUTH. Alas, such appeals make no difference to the fact of conflict and the urge to coerce. Indeed, they sometimes justify such urges. That is how I see the Covenant functioning today, at least for those committed to peace and freedom. We who agree make a Covenant with each other and defend ourselves from those outside of it. I am very happy for those who make that Covenant, are faithful to God, and see themselves as choosing life under the Covenant according to God's will. But I wouldn't want to leave out those signatories who do not. The ULTIMATE TRUTH of the Covenant is our solidarity in commitment.
