I don't think domestic industry can compete, even with protective tariffs, so long as regulatory, compliance, and labor costs are as high as they are here.

Domestic industry can and does compete, as long as it specializes, automates, and innovates. I think the protectionist right tends to overstate "sending jobs overseas," and the left tends to overregulate and bureaucratize.

That's a microcosm of where we are going. After watching the movie Her I realized we will be able to customize the personality to one that is very appealing and I learned from listening to David Friedberg on the All-In podcast recently that "we" will be able to have the most deep and esoteric discussions on virtually any topic with our robot. Today our obsession with our phones seems like a problem, just wait till the friendly and smart robots arrive. Will they be programmed to report to Elon/Palantir anti-state behavior? Will their "observations" be admissible in a court of law? Will they have a memory?

Do the dishes and laundry, and weed the garden? I'd finance that like a car. I'd spend more money on it than I would a car!
