Another good article. This is so important in explaining how the common man is tired of being at the ass end of misguided, so called elites, who manifest errors in the real world. I see this all the time in design and systems where there are serious problems designed in by so called experts. Any new system could make huge overall improvements in civic functionality by solving this problem. IMO, it starts in the Academy.
You touch briefly on funding, but entire books could be written on how funding (and the expectations behind it) corrupts science. Scientists are human beings, susceptible to incentives. And needless to say, when the government puts its thumb on the scale, things get even more twisted up.
"In the Republic of Science, there is certainly room for experts."
As long as we take EVERYTHING anybody says with a dose of skepticism, I agree.
I have been concerned about this. In fact, I remember having a conversation with an idealist about this in the last year or so. This person shared the concern that science shouldn't be biased by money. Yet resources for all scientific endeavors have to come from SOMEWHERE. So, I suspect it's going to be a game of bias mitigation -- OR -- a future of crowdfunded science, which should mitigate, though won't eliminate, bias.
The universities perpetuate these incorrect facts and ideals. Also, they shortcut initiates past real world experience and place these boy pharaohs, as a term you like to use, into positions of power where they design and build shit that is wrong. I see this in architecture all the time, where bad roof design in a snowy environment leads to many problems for the building in the future. Home owners who hired these architects with credentials but no experience build these problems into the design and then the owner has huge utility bills to run heat cable on the roof to melt ice dams. These systems can cost $1k/ month to run during the winter season, let me tell these home owners are not happy with that and I don't blame them. To be fair it's a group effort of the ship of fools as HOA's have a big role to play in what designs they approve. These designers are not factoring in elements of nature such as Wind, Water, Mountain, Valley, Sun/Shade and that's because they are not taught these things in the Academy but that's another rant.
You explain the relevant madness and put it into concise words. Great writing as usual.

Whew. What to do with the Academy...

Good piece. Thanks.
